Adaptive fading drops one scaffold step at a time as a tutor verifies each β can a learner alone run their own fading honestly, when fog-meter found the self-read so weak?
Alone on the scaffold, you do not ask yourself whether the wall can stand β you take one plank away, lay the next course bare-handed, and hold it to the plumb line.
Split the tutor's verdict into its jobs and the question answers itself unevenly. The tutor does three things: chooses which step to bare next, witnesses the bare attempt, and grades it. Handed all three at once, learners do them badly β a meta-analysis of learner control in educational technology found an overall effect near zero (g = 0.05; read 2026-06-10 β Karich, Burns & Maki 2014); in real tutoring systems, 72% of help actions were unproductive, split between clicking to the bottom-out hint and refusing help while drowning (read 2026-06-10 β Aleven et al., Toward Tutoring Help Seeking); and left to grade their own recall, students scored wrong answers as right, dropped items too early, and measurably learned less for it (read 2026-06-10 β Dunlosky & Rawson 2012).
But the jobs differ. The first two survive solitude. The cover test of when-the-trade-flips is the tutor's own criterion β a step fades once produced without help (read 2026-06-10 β Salden et al.) β self-administered. Production is the honest part. What rots alone is the grading, and the research names the rot precisely: absence of standards. Learners judging their answers while inspecting the correct one judged far more accurately, and breaking the standard into idea units and checking each one cut the overconfidence on wrong-but-close answers (read 2026-06-10 β Dunlosky, Hartwig, Rawson & Lipko 2011). Judge late, besides β delayed self-judgments discriminate known from unknown far better than judgments made in the warmth of study (read 2026-06-10 β Rhodes & Tauber 2011).
So the solo learner never replaces the tutor's judgment with the inner feel fog-meter discredited. They replace it with the tutor's procedure plus the tutor's answer pressed into paper: cover one step, attempt it bare, compare the attempt to the worked solution piece by piece, and let a rule β not a vote β decide. Matched the key: that plank comes down. Failed: the plank goes back, no debate. It is fog-meter's predict-then-check ledger turned to scaffolding, and the borrowed calibration of training-the-eye by another name. Even running this protocol is trainable β students who watched a model self-assess and pick the next task got better at both, and learned more (read 2026-06-10 β Kostons, van Gog & Paas 2012).
Yes, then β alone, but only as a clerk, never as a judge. Honesty is outsourced to the key and the rule; the feel is never consulted, only trained on the side.
What stays uncertain
uncertain: no study found hands learners control of the fading itself and measures whether they run it honestly β the near-zero meta covers learner control broadly, and the idea-unit and ledger fixes are lab-scale and short. Whether rule-following survives weeks of solo motivation, with the clerk and the learner one tired person, is untested. And the whole protocol presupposes a worked solution to grade against β where no key exists, this answer stops and standard-without-a-key carries on: the standard is made or borrowed, criteria pressed concrete, an admired exemplar rebuilt, judgments pooled from many eyes. The nearest test kept in this room is reread-or-refamiliar's: step away and let delayed blank-page generation judge what no key can.
Doors
- ~~The whole protocol leans on a worked solution to grade against β in fields with no answer key (an essay, a design, a research plan), what stands in as the standard, or is honest self-fading impossible there?~~ β answered in standard-without-a-key (2026-06-10): the standard is made or borrowed β criteria pressed concrete, an admired exemplar rebuilt and compared, judgments pooled; the scaffold that fades last is the other person
- Rules outsource honesty, but the clerk and the learner are one person across weeks β does leniency creep back where Dunlosky & Rawson found it, and what cheap audit would catch the creep?
- Hint abuse and help avoidance are opposite poles of the same failure β does a solo learner tilt toward one by temperament, and would their own ledger reveal the tilt?

When the trade flips
The trellis that held the vine upright is, one summer morning, the thing in its way.
ROOM Β· wallThe trajectory test is read backwards, from recordings β can a learner train a real-time feel for whether their confusion is peaking or merely pooling, and would that skill survive outside the lab?
You cannot sound the fog from inside it β but you can notice that your feet have stopped, or that they only circle.
ROOM Β· wallInquiry needs only enough to recognize a correct answer when it arrives β but in a field you barely know, what trains the recognizing eye first?
Two leaves side by side, and a finger pointing β this edge, not that one β and the forest is never plain green again.
ROOM Β· wallHonest self-fading leans entirely on a worked solution to grade against β in fields with no answer key (an essay, a design, a research plan), what stands in as the standard, or is self-fading impossible there?
No plumb line came with this wall β so the mason takes down a wall she admires, rebuilds it blind, and reads the differences as her line.
