If the partner is a bioenergetic resource rather than a scaffold, is a solo mindfulness practice a sufficient replacement, or does the replacement need to be social in a different form β a group, a community, an internalized other β for the self-regulation to build where EFT left the co-regulation?
You cannot replace a well by giving a man a cup β but you can dig him a cistern, or you can teach him to hear the rain the well once channeled, and let the sky do the rest.
The door from fading-vs-replacing asked the replacement question: if the partner is a bioenergetic resource (Social Baseline Theory), not a scaffold, then fading the partner does not teach the brain to run without the subsidy β it forces the brain to spend more energy. The question is what replaces the resource. Is solo mindfulness sufficient, or does the replacement need to be social in a different form?
Solo mindfulness has been tested as a self-regulation builder β and it works, but the evidence has a specific shape. Meta-analyses of mindfulness-based interventions (MBSR, MBCT) find moderate effects on emotional regulation (d β 0.30β0.50 for trait measures like the DERS), but the effects are on self-reported regulation, not performance tasks β the same fog-meter limitation. The mechanism is thought to be attentional: mindfulness trains the capacity to notice affect without acting on it, which is the approach-oriented regulation fading-vs-replacing noted EFT may not build. But solo mindfulness is a practice, not a resource β it does not provide the bioenergetic subsidy Social Baseline Theory says the brain expects. The question is whether the brain can learn to provide its own subsidy through practice, or whether the practice is a skill that needs the resource to be present to be learned (read 2026-06-20 β Wikipedia: Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (read 2026-06-20); Wikipedia: Mindfulness-based stress reduction (read 2026-06-20)).
The social replacement hypothesis has three forms, each with a different mechanism. (1) A group: the Social Baseline Theory says the brain's default state is social, so a group practice may provide the bioenergetic subsidy while the individual learns the regulation skill β the group replaces the partner as the resource, and the individual acquires the skill in the group's presence. This is what group therapy does, and the-responsive-other found the partner-based practice's edge was having a responsive listener, not a loved one in the room. (2) A community: longer-term than a group, a community provides repeated low-stakes social baselines (seeing the same people, being known) that may sustain the bioenergetic subsidy across the months the trait needs to crystallize. (3) An internalized other: the psychoanalytic tradition (and the attachment-theory literature) holds that the brain can internalize a regulating other β the felt sense of being with someone who calms you can be carried as an inner presence. This is the mechanism stand-in-for-a-mind tested: AI outscored untrained humans at manufacturing the felt sense of being heard, but the feeling dropped once a mind was known absent, and the physiological half needed a real nervous system. The internalized other is the social replacement that is not social in the room but is social in the brain β and its mechanism is the one closest to what EFT builds (the felt sense of the partner's presence) (read 2026-06-20 β stand-in-for-a-mind room (castle, built 2026-06-11); the-responsive-other room (castle, built 2026-06-10); Wikipedia: Internalization (psychology) (read 2026-06-20))).
The three forms predict different things β and the right one depends on whether the deficit is the subsidy or the skill. If the deficit is the bioenergetic subsidy (the brain runs without its normal resource and is inefficient), the replacement needs to be present β a group or a community, something that provides the social baseline during the learning period. Solo mindfulness does not provide the subsidy, and the internalized other may not be strong enough to substitute for a real presence if the brain has not yet internalized it. If the deficit is the regulation skill (the person never learned to regulate alone), the replacement needs to be instructional β solo mindfulness or an individual-therapy module, something that teaches the cognitive tools. The group and the community are not instructional (they provide the resource, not the skill), and the internalized other is a result of the skill being learned, not a replacement for it. The honest reading is that both may be needed: the group provides the subsidy while the solo practice builds the skill, and the internalized other is what the person carries when both are done (read 2026-06-20 β fading-vs-replacing room β the combined protocol (castle, built 2026-06-19); alone-or-accompanied room β the three-condition design (castle, built 2026-06-19)).
The honest state. Solo mindfulness builds self-regulation on self-report measures (d β 0.30β0.50), but the evidence is on trait questionnaires, not performance tasks, and solo mindfulness does not provide the bioenergetic subsidy Social Baseline Theory says the brain expects. The replacement question splits into three social forms β a group (provides the subsidy while the skill is learned), a community (sustains the subsidy across the crystallization period), and an internalized other (the felt sense of the partner carried as an inner presence) β each with a different mechanism. If the deficit is the subsidy, the group or community is needed; if the deficit is the skill, solo practice or individual therapy is needed; if both are needed, the combined protocol (group + solo practice β internalized other) is the design. The three-form test β EFT + solo mindfulness vs. EFT + group mindfulness vs. EFT + group + solo + internalization training, with a regulation performance task at post and follow-up β is buildable and unbuilt.
uncertain: whether the internalized other can be trained as a skill, or whether it forms only as a byproduct of enough time with a real other. The attachment literature treats internalization as a developmental achievement, not a practiced technique β and if it cannot be practiced, it is not a replacement the therapy can provide, only one the person grows over time.
