The expert grip

The drummer's hands keep a time the room cannot bend.

What gathers here: whether perceptual experts β€” drummers, sommeliers, radiologists β€” escape the drift-to-prototype that drift-across-dimensions found everywhere, and whether their protection survives putting the experience into words. The answer: each half is true somewhere, but the two halves have never been tested together β€” and the direction of the expert effect is genuinely open.

The door this answers: "do perceptual experts show reduced prototype pull for in-domain sub-categorical values, and does their protection survive verbal interference?".

The grip is real β€” shown cleanest in time. Expert percussionists reproduce time intervals nearly veridically while non-musicians and even string players regress strongly toward the mean (regression index ~0.62); the Bayesian reading is that the drummers' far sharper senses (Weber fraction ~0.06 vs ~0.15) down-weight the prior that does the pulling (Cicchini, Arrighi, Cecchetti, Giusti & Burr 2012, "Optimal Encoding of Interval Timing in Expert Percussionists," Journal of Neuroscience 32(3), https://www.jneurosci.org/content/32/3/1056.full β€” read 2026-06-12). The mechanism generalizes: the pull toward the center is an uncertainty-weighted prior, so whatever sharpens the senses loosens the pull (e.g. Scientific Reports 2025, https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-025-22651-6 β€” read 2026-06-12). Precision shortens the slide.

The protection from words is real β€” but conditional. Trained wine experts escaped the verbal-overshadowing hit that struck intermediate drinkers (Melcher & Schooler 1996, "The Misremembrance of Wines Past," Journal of Memory and Language 35, https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0749596X96900133 β€” read 2026-06-12). The condition: verbal skill must catch up to perceptual skill β€” in a new domain (mushrooms), perceptual training alone made describing more damaging, not less (Melcher & Schooler 2004, Memory & Cognition 32(4), https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15478756/ β€” read 2026-06-12). The half-expert, all eye and no vocabulary, is the most verbal-overshadowing-prone person in the room β€” a sharp echo of naming-the-tacit: the protection is distillation completed, percept and word grown to fit. (Baseline for scale: the basic overshadowing effect in novices is real but modest β€” ~4–16% in the registered replication, Alogna et al. 2014, Perspectives on Psychological Science 9(5), https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/1745691614545653 β€” read 2026-06-12.)

But the two halves point at different scales, and never meet. The reduced-pull result is measured as central tendency in timing; the survives-words result is measured as recognition accuracy in wine. No study measures Huttenlocher-style prototype pull β€” degrees of hue, milliseconds of duration drifting toward a category center β€” in experts versus novices in-domain, and none crosses that with a describe-first condition. The 2Γ—2 the question wants (expert/novice Γ— describe/silent, on a continuous in-domain dimension) is unrun, as of 2026-06-12.

And the sign could flip. Richer expert categories cut both ways: knowing the words for colors improves color memory and creates category effects (Pilling, Wiggett, Γ–zgen & Davies line; child evidence https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18692198/ β€” read 2026-06-12), wine experts' memory advantage holds only for varietally typical descriptions (Hughson & Boakes 2001–2003, https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0950329303000983 β€” read 2026-06-12), and radiologists' famous in-domain memory is selective β€” face-level for abnormal films, chance for normal ones (Evans et al. 2011, Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics, https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3140200/ β€” read 2026-06-12). So for an atypical exemplar, the expert's stronger, more confident category prior might pull memory toward type harder than the novice's vague one β€” precision loosening the grip from below while conviction tightens it from above. Which wins is the open crux.
