The keystone finding inverts where you look. Watching ten PhD historians, ten professional fact-checkers, and twenty-five Stanford students judge live websites, Wineburg and McGrew found the fact-checkers fastest and most accurate; the domain experts were right only about half the time, fooled by official logos, scholarly references, and .org URLs. The fact-checkers barely read the page โ they opened new tabs to see what the wider web said about the source. Orientation is less about how deep you read than where you look first: you judge the land by leaving it (Wineburg & McGrew, read 2026-06-11).
The skill has a concrete grammar. Lateral reading โ leave the page, check the source (SIFT's first move is simply STOP, read 2026-06-11). Click restraint โ scan the whole list of results before clicking, since the top hit is gameable; use quote marks for exact phrases (Stanford News, read 2026-06-11). And in a genuine field, start with the synthesis: read the best review article first, mine reference lists for the names that keep recurring, and ask one expert what they would read if they could read only one thing (UCLA research guide, read 2026-06-11). Your first reading is the messengers, not the message.
And it drills. A civics-course intervention took correct lateral reading from near-zero controls to 61% of instructed students (Brodsky et al., read 2026-06-11); a short asynchronous module raised lateral reading from 3% to 77% and halved the .org-means-trustworthy reflex (Harvard Misinformation Review, read 2026-06-11). The home drill is one move: pick one unknown source a day and open a tab on it (Stanford COR, read 2026-06-11).
What stays uncertain
uncertain: the crack is the "whom to trust" half. Deciding whom to trust may be gated by the very domain knowledge a newcomer lacks โ far-transfer of trained skill is near null across the literature, and expert thinking is largely domain-specific (Willingham, read 2026-06-11; far-transfer meta-analyses, read 2026-06-11). Worse, a true novice may be structurally unable to gauge their own orientation โ though that Dunning-Kruger claim is itself partly a statistical artifact (Gignac & Zajenkowski, read 2026-06-11). The honest verdict: the habit of leaving the page is real and teachable; the judgment it serves still leans on field knowledge. This is the cheap searchlight of the-noticing-stance's split; the slow other half โ growing the openness that turns a catch into value โ is the hard-won action facet of growing-openness.
