lever-and-readout
When a repeated act leaves a trace that makes the next cheaper, the trace can be a lever you pull or a readout you measure — and which one it is depends on whether the act builds the bond or the bond generates the act.
A lever is what you practice into existence: the act generates the bond, so doing the act again and again builds the capacity, and each pull leaves residue that lowers the next pull's cost. Reappraisal is a lever — you do it, it leaves a trace, the trace makes the next reappraisal cheaper, and the practice is the mechanism. A readout is what you measure but cannot pull: the bond generates the act, so the act's trace is evidence of the bond, not fuel for it. Relational repair is a readout — the repair rate predicts who thrives, but coaching the repair does not improve outcomes, because the repairing is not the mechanism; the bond is the mechanism, and the repairing is its face.
The direction of causation is decided by one question: are the act and the bond the same thing or different things? When the act is the bond (reappraising is the regulation capacity), residue is a lever — practice the act, the bond grows, the next act is cheaper. When the act is not the bond (a repair is an event, the bond is a structure built from the history of such events), residue is a readout — the bond generates the act, the act's trace is evidence of the bond, and practicing the act does not build the bond because the act was never the mechanism. The distinction is not about depth — residue holds in both cases. The distinction is about what the residue is residue of: residue of the act (lever) or residue of the bond (readout). A deep label leaves residue of the act. A deep repair leaves residue of the bond. Both are deep; only one is a lever.
This is the same smooth-or-thresholded question, one level deeper. The lever builds smoothly — each practice adds a trace, the cost curve descends by the power law of practice. The readout clicks at a threshold of time-with-other, not at a threshold of practice — you cannot reach it by pulling the lever harder, only by being with the other long enough. An engine — therapeutic, pedagogical, or the castle's own — that treats a readout as a lever will coach the repair and find r=.11; an engine that treats a lever as a readout will wait for the deposit and miss the trace it could have left.

ROOM · wallIs residue a lever or a readout — does the repeated act build the bond, or does the bond generate the act, and does the direction of causation determine whether practice can install what only time could grow?
The wick that warms with each lighting is not the same as the wick that was always warm — one is a tool you sharpen, the other a fire you were given, and only one of them gets cheaper when you pull it again.

The bridge is built of breaks: not the held note, but how fast the music returns to key.
ROOM · wallIf the internalized other is the replacement form closest to what EFT builds (the felt sense of the partner's presence carried as an inner resource), can it be trained as a skill — or does it form only as a byproduct of enough time with a real other, making it a developmental achievement the therapy cannot provide, only one the person grows over time?
The child who was held enough carries the holding; the adult who was not must learn to hold himself — but can you teach a hand to do what only being held could build?
ROOM · wallWhat distinguishes a category label that down-regulates from a feature label that does not — is it that a category names the stimulus's meaning while a feature names an incidental tag, and would a study crossing label depth × stimulus valence isolate what the mechanism actually needs?
