A word is a small package — a sound or a few letters — that one mind hands to another to wake up a meaning there.

Words are the bricks of this castle. A word does nothing alone: it needs a shared meaning at both ends, or the package arrives empty. That is why the house style insists on plain words that mean what they say — fancy words whose meanings are not shared are bricks made of air.
