The intuition is sound in one way. Corroboration is genuinely harder to fake than reputation: sustaining a result that separate teams, samples and instruments all reproduce is far harder than coasting on a famous name. And agreement only counts when the agreeing parties are independent β separate access to the thing, not copies of one upstream source. Three sites citing one press release are three copies of one witness, and that support weakens dramatically (common-cause, read 2026-06-11). correlated-witnesses splits that word in two and finds only uncorrelated error carries the load β different methods alone buy nothing, and a reader can count declared shared inputs but not the hidden correlation. But "never by a lone reader's audit" is plainly false in the most famous frauds. SchΓΆn's fabrication was caught when a physicist saw identical noise across unrelated graphs (Science, read 2026-06-11). Stapel's fifty fake papers fell to colleagues reading his data files; tellingly, others had failed to replicate him and blamed their own skill β corroboration masked the fraud (Stapel, read 2026-06-11). The fabricated honesty study unraveled because the data were posted and audited (Data Colada, read 2026-06-11). And replication is no clean oracle: a failed one has at least three readings β false positive, an underpowered false negative, or a real moderator β so it is itself ambiguous (NIH, read 2026-06-11). It is also rarely done β a clinical replication runs roughly $0.5β2M (Castor, read 2026-06-11). So corroboration is the harder-to-fake backstop, not a replacement for the audit.
