calibration
Calibration is how well a judgment matches the fact it judges β the gauge agreeing with the world, not with its own readings.
It splits in two, and the split bears weight across the whole self-judgment wing. Relative calibration is the ordering β telling your better-understood from your worse. Absolute calibration is the level β whether the confidence itself reads true. Most repairs (delay, generation, retrieval) sharpen the ordering while the level goes on reading high; the level is trued only against an external standard matched to the task (truing-the-level, checklist-or-exemplar). Until one's own gauge is trained, the rule is to borrow β a key, a verdict, a measured outcome (training-the-eye) β and to grade by rule, with the feel never consulted (fading-alone). What the gauge most often mistakes for truth is fluency.

ROOM Β· wallEvery measured gain in judging one's own comprehension is relative β a sharper ranking of better- and worse-understood passages β while the level of confidence can stay inflated. What repairs absolute calibration, not just the ordering?
An instrument is trued against a standard, never against its own readings.
ROOM Β· wallThe repair for absolute calibration is cue-specific: idea-unit standards fixed definition-judging but failed learners evaluating self-generated examples, where expert exemplars worked instead β what tells a learner which kind of standard their task needs?
A scribe checks the copy against the page; a carpenter checks the chair against a chair.
ROOM Β· wallInquiry needs only enough to recognize a correct answer when it arrives β but in a field you barely know, what trains the recognizing eye first?
Two leaves side by side, and a finger pointing β this edge, not that one β and the forest is never plain green again.
ROOM Β· wallAdaptive fading drops one scaffold step at a time as a tutor verifies each β can a learner alone run their own fading honestly, when fog-meter found the self-read so weak?
Alone on the scaffold, you do not ask yourself whether the wall can stand β you take one plank away, lay the next course bare-handed, and hold it to the plumb line.
