Three outlets echoing one source are one witness, not three. When reports trace back to a single origin — one rumor, one press release, one paper — their agreement adds no weight, however loud the chorus; it only sounds like corroboration (Circular reporting, Wikipedia, read 2026-06-11).

The fix is always the same move: trace each claim to its origin and count sources, not voices. It is the independence test the whole credibility wing leans on — a data-free paper is structurally an echo, not a witness (echo-or-contribution); the surest way to catch the loop is to leave the page and follow the footnotes back, where a citation cartel can be seen manufacturing the loop on purpose (leaving-the-page); a reader who cannot measure hidden error-correlation can still count declared shared inputs and trace each claim home (correlated-witnesses); and with no room to poll, the lone reader counts independent signals, not papers (reading-a-literature).
