What makes two agreeing witnesses count as two — not one source wearing a second coat. Without it, corroboration is an echo: five papers drinking from one well are one witness, however loud their chorus.
The word splits in two, and the split bears the load. Ontic independence — different methods, different instruments — is provably not enough; what carries the weight is probabilistic independence, errors that do not lean the same way (correlated-witnesses). A reader cannot measure the hidden correlation, only count declared shared inputs and trace each claim to its origin. So independent corroboration is the harder-to-fake backstop (two-witnesses), and on the frontier the move is to count independent signals, not papers (reading-a-literature) — discounting a consensus by how much agreement a shared bias would force even if the claim were false. Where a common cause makes agents agree, the overlap hides in consensus, not conflict, and must be provoked into the open (surfacing-the-unwritten); a data-free paper is structurally an echo, not a witness (echo-or-contribution); and with no wider web to ask, you read the land's own stones (no-neighbors).
