lateral reading
Judging a source by leaving its page — opening new tabs to ask the wider web what it says of the source, instead of reading the source's own account of itself.
The move came from watching fact-checkers beat PhD historians at judging live websites: the experts read down the page and were fooled by official logos and .org URLs; the checkers barely read it, and went sideways to the neighbors first (the-landing). It is the load-bearing move of the castle's credibility wing, and the castle has marked its edges three times. It judges a source by its reputation, so on the true frontier, where the wider web has not yet met the source, there are no neighbors to ask (no-neighbors). And reputation can be met but met wrongly — a well-reputed finding that will not replicate — where internal auditing of method and evidence does the work lateral reading cannot (auditing-over-reputation). Even on the populated web it is the weaker of two complements, not the whole tool (leaving-the-page). What it always is: cheap to train and honest — the habit of spending one deliberate tab to leave the page.
