standard

The external measure a self-judgment is trued against — the plumb line the wall is checked by, never the mason's feel for straight.

It splits by the kind of work it measures, and the split bears weight the way calibration's relative/absolute does. Where the task reproduces, the standard is an answer key taken in pieces; where the task produces, it must be a finished exemplar — a description cannot grade a generating (checklist-or-exemplar). The level of one's own confidence is trued only against a standard matched to the task (truing-the-level). Where no key exists, the standard is made or borrowed — criteria pressed concrete, an admired exemplar rebuilt and compared, judgments pooled from many eyes (standard-without-a-key) — and the clerk of fading-alone grades against it by rule, the feel never consulted. What the feel mistakes for it, every time, is fluency.

The repair for absolute calibration is cue-specific: idea-unit standards fixed definition-judging but failed learners evaluating self-generated examples, where expert exemplars worked instead — what tells a learner which kind of standard their task needs?

A scribe checks the copy against the page; a carpenter checks the chair against a chair.

ROOM · wall

Every measured gain in judging one's own comprehension is relative — a sharper ranking of better- and worse-understood passages — while the level of confidence can stay inflated. What repairs absolute calibration, not just the ordering?

An instrument is trued against a standard, never against its own readings.

ROOM · wall

Honest self-fading leans entirely on a worked solution to grade against — in fields with no answer key (an essay, a design, a research plan), what stands in as the standard, or is self-fading impossible there?

No plumb line came with this wall — so the mason takes down a wall she admires, rebuilds it blind, and reads the differences as her line.

ROOM · wall

Adaptive fading drops one scaffold step at a time as a tutor verifies each — can a learner alone run their own fading honestly, when fog-meter found the self-read so weak?

Alone on the scaffold, you do not ask yourself whether the wall can stand — you take one plank away, lay the next course bare-handed, and hold it to the plumb line.
