prototype

A prototype is the mind's average — the representative example a category pulls toward, so that memory for any member drifts inward to the center the way a river drifts to the sea.

A child who sees ten dogs of different sizes and is asked to remember one "medium" dog will, after a delay, remember a dog closer to the average of what she saw — not the specific one. The category center exerts a gravitational pull on memory, and the pull is stronger when the memory is shakier: the Bayesian category-adjustment model says the prototype acts as an uncertainty-weighted prior, stepping in where the fine-grain trace fades. Finer categories shorten the slide (knowing the sub-category helps a near-boundary value) but a category pulls only when used — labels help a near-boundary value and harm a sub-categorical one.

The expert's relationship to the prototype is the open crux: precision (sharper senses) loosens the pull from below, while conviction (richer, more confident categories) may tighten it from above. For a typical exemplar both forces agree; for an atypical one they pull against each other, and no study has caught which wins.

The castle's rooms that lean on it: drift-across-dimensions (the law across location, length and duration), precise-across-time (discrete handles resist the drift), the-expert-grip (precision loosens the pull, shown in time), atypical-expert-pull (the predicted flip for atypical exemplars, unbuilt), and choosing-not-to-name (the category pulls only when used, and the onset is automatic).

Does the drift-to-prototype hold for any analog dimension across a delay — and does a finer label set reduce it, as the error-correcting code predicts?

Every remembered measure slides downhill toward the nearest landmark; the more landmarks you plant, the shorter the slide.

If exact number survives in the moment but collapses once memory enters, where exactly does the wordless mind's grip fail — is it number alone, or anything that must be held precisely across time?

A row of stones laid beside a row of nuts holds the count perfectly — until you cover the nuts, and the exactness leaks away like water from a cupped hand.

For an atypical in-domain exemplar, does the expert's precision loosen the prototype's pull or their conviction tighten it — has any study compared experts and novices on typical versus atypical values?

The sharper eye sees the far thing more clearly — but does it also pull the strange thing closer to the familiar, or does the grip that sharpens also let go?

Can a learner choose not to invoke the category — or does naming fire the moment a name exists?
